DoorDash Driver in Australia – What you should be aware of before signing up to deliver

Becoming the largest food delivery platform in the United States does not make DoorDash satisfied, they want to continue expanding their services throughout the world, including to countries in the southern part of the world.

DoorDash officially operated in Australia in the last quarter of 2019. They chose Melbourne as their first port of call. The city is famous for its multi-cultural cafes and restaurants.

In Australia, DoorDash will compete fiercely with incumbent players, Uber Eats and Menulog. Both have been operating long before DoorDash came along and both are very popular and have a lot of loyal customers.

Availability for Drivers

DoorDash has experienced significant growth in Australia. Since their presence in 2019 in Melbourne – Victoria, they are now officially present in 8 states and territories across the country.

You can access DoorDash service in almost all cities and suburbs in these states. So you can still sign up to become a driver even if you don’t come from a big city.

Because it came last into the game, DoorDash’s market share is still below the other two big players. One of their efforts to get a bigger market share is by recruiting more delivery drivers or what are usually called Dashers.

DoorDash opens up as many opportunities as possible for Australians or anyone in this country to become a Dasher, they even simplify the requirements for becoming a driver.

Driver Requirements

In my experience, the requirements to become a DoorDash delivery driver or Dasher are the easiest among other similar platforms. So you can be accepted and activated more quickly.

The following are some requirements for bikers:

  • More than 18 years old.
  • Have an ABN or Australian Business Number (ABN).
  • Consent to a Background Check from National Crime Check (NCC), it’s free of charge.

For those who use a scooter or car to deliver, you will be asked to complete the following documents:

  • Driver’s license. Overseas/international license accepted to deliver. They also receive a P plater (P2 or green plate) license.
  • Vehicle registration document.

Delivery Options for Drivers

Currently, DoorDash has two types of services for its delivery drivers in Australia. Both are still delivery services but with different merchants.

Restaurant Delivery. Food delivery from restaurants is a core service from DoorDash. They continue to grow by adding more merchants to its platform

Grocery Delivery. In 2020 they tried to diversify their services by launching a grocery delivery service to target a wider range of customers. Currently, they are collaborating with several big grocery shops and convenience stores such as Coles, IGA and several other stores.

Delivery Driver Pay

Determining delivery gig pay is quite difficult, because driver pay is determined by many factors such as delivery demand and how many drivers are online at that time.

Of course, these two things will not be exactly the same every day. However, a driver can still guess based on variations in the demand for a delivery service over time. For example, on what days and times demand is usually high.

If you are still curious about how much DoorDash drivers in Australia usually earn. Below I will provide a little insight based on the experiences of several fellow Dashers in our community.

One of the Top Dashers in our community can complete up to 4 deliveries per hour. Delivery rates for each delivery vary, ranging from $6 – $10 for delivery from restaurants.

The rate will get better when they successfully complete Shop and Deliver orders. As we know, this type of delivery has a couple of times higher rate than the restaurant delivery.

Driver Payment Options

Payment day is the day that a delivery driver has been waiting for. Like other delivery platforms, DoorDash makes payments to Dashers using the bank transfer method. There are two types of payment offered.

Weekly Payments. By default, DoorDash driver payments will be made every week. So every completed delivery order on Monday – Sunday will be paid on the next Monday.

Fast Pay. This is a payment option for Dashers who want to cash out their available balance on the same day. Drivers can take advantage of daily cash out with Fast Pay once every day and this can be done without any additional costs, aka free of charge.
