Amazon Flex Driver in Australia – What to Know Before Delivering for the Online Retailer

Being a gig delivery driver in Australia is not just about delivering foods or groceries. You also have the option to spare your time into extra money by driving your vehicle to deliver packages like the Amazon Flex program.

Amazon e-Commerce platform enjoyed exceptional growth di Australia. According to a Roy Morgan report, the company has quadrupled its customer base in the nation over the last three years, resulting in higher revenues.

This sales growth must be balanced with improvements in the company’s logistics performance. That’s why Amazon wants to expand its own logistics network across Australia, with the goal of reducing the company’s reliance on other courier providers like Star Track and AU Post.

Amazon Flex not only benefits its business by allowing it to transport customer items more efficiently, but it also allows gig drivers to make additional income alongside delivering meals.

Availability for Drivers

Amazon is still accepting new delivery drivers to join their platform. The programme offers opportunities for gig drivers in almost every state in the country.

In Australia, The Amazon Flex program currently operates at the following locations: Sydney, Newcastle, Gosford, Melbourne, Geelong, Brisbane, Perth, Gold Coast and Adelaide.

However, they only hire new drivers based on the delivery need in each city in which they operate. To find out if the Amazon Flex programme is accepting new drivers in your area, download the Flex app then sign up.

When you register for the program and complete numerous registration steps in the app, you might receive a message saying “Thank you for your interest”. It indicates that the Amazon Flex program is not actively onboarding new drivers in your chosen location.

Don’t worry, they’ll send you an email when new opportunities become available. And if you get the email, I encourage that you complete the onboarding procedure immediately since there are only a few slots available.

Driver Requirements

When sign up to become Amazon Flex driver, it is important to have the following items on hand To ensure that the onboarding process runs smoothly.

  • Unrestricted or Full Australian Driver’s Licence. Any overseas licence must be converted to Australian first before it can be used to register.
  • ABN (Australian Business Number). 11-digit number that every gig drivers must have.
  • Australian Banking details. Used for payment purposes via direct deposit which will be made every week.
  • Auto insurance policy.
  • Identification documents (Passport/Citizenship Certificate/Birth Certificate/Immicard)
  • Background check by Accurate
  • Blue card (NSW-based drivers only). In NSW you are required to have a valid blue card for work in the transport and logistics industry. If you do not already have a Blue Card, you must go through training. Don’t worry, Amazon will cover the expense of training.

To become an Amazon Flex Driver you must have a four-wheeled vehicle. There are three types of vehicles that you can use:

  • Sedans. The smallest type of vehicle allowed and eligible for 4-hours blocks which let you earn a minimum of $114. Examples include the VW Passat, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or other 4-door vehicles.
  • Large passenger vehicle. This is an SUV or minivan type vehicle that has seats in the back and can usually transport more than 5 passengers. This type of vehicle is eligible for a 6.5-hour block which earns you a minimum of $171.
  • Cargo vans. The largest type of vehicle that can be used on this platform. Examples are the Toyota HiAce or VW Transporter. This vehicle is eligible for 8-hour blocks which can make you earn $270 per block.

Delivery Driver Pay

Amazon Flex drivers are paid based on the vehicle they use to deliver, the value of the delivery block they get, and how many blocks they can complete in a single day.

Let’s say, you drive a sedan and are assigned a 4-hour delivery block that allows you to earn $114 that day and complete the job on time. Based on that scenario, an Amazon Flex driver earns around $28.5 per hour.

The minimum price for a 4-hour delivery block is $114. Because I know several fellow Flex drivers in Sydney who usually receive 4-hour blocks worth between $130 and $200. As a result, their hourly earnings may exceed $30.

Drivers’ pay can obviously be higher if they are willing to take more than one block every day. Amazon allows drivers to pre-book a second block, but completing the first block on time for the second block is challenging, and not every driver are capable of doing so.
